A new sterile technique effective on capturing tramp ants for microbiological investigations Neotropical Entomology
Schuller,Lucia; Matté,Glavur R; Matté,Maria H.
Tramp ants are an outstanding group of organisms that have a definitive and important role in carrying pathogens. The purpose of this study was to develop a microbiological sterile technique of collecting ants from contaminated areas. The traps were composed of Petri dishes containing culture media, and were tested to verify the applicability of the system. A positive correlation between the microorganism growth and the presence of ants inside or around traps was observed. The technique described demonstrated to be useful to collect ants from different environments, helping the surveillance of pathogenic microorganisms that are of public health concern.

Caracterización química y actividad antibacteriana de aceites esenciales de Ocimum basilicum L. y Ocimum basilicum var. genovese L. Rev. Protección Veg.
Rojas,Miriam M; Sánchez,Yaíma; Abreu,Yudith; Espinosa,Ivette; Correa,Teresa M; Pino,Oriela.

Extended spectrum β-lactamase producers among nosocomial Enterobacteriaceae in Latin America BJID
Guzmán-Blanco,Manuel; Labarca,Jaime A.; Villegas,Maria Virginia; Gotuzzo,Eduardo.
To review the epidemiology of nosocomial extended spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in Latin America, a systematic search of the biomedical literature (PubMed) was performed for articles published since 2005. Rates of nosocomial infections caused by extended spectrum β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in Latin America have increased since 2005. Up to 32% of Escherichia coli and up to 58% of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates are extended spectrum β-lactamase-positive, rates that are higher than in other world regions. From a region-wide perspective, 11-25% of E. coli isolates and 45-53% of K. pneumoniae isolates were nonsusceptible to third-generation cephalosporins. At the country level, there was a wide range in Enterobacteriaceae...

Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases in Klebsiella spp and Escherichia coli obtained in a Brazilian teaching hospital: detection, prevalence and molecular typing BJM
Freitas,Ana Lúcia Peixoto de; Machado,Denise Pires; Soares,Fabiana da Silva Correa; Barth,Afonso Luís.
His study was performed to compare the methods of detection and to estimate the prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) among Klebsiella spp and E.coli in a university hospital in southern Brazil. We also used a molecular typing method to evaluate the genetic correlation between isolates of ESBL K.pneumoniae. Production of ESBL was investigated in 95 clinical isolates of Klebsiella spp and Escherichia coli from Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, using Kirby-Bauer zone diameter (KB), double-disk diffusion (DD), breakpoint for ceftazidime (MIC CAZ), increased zone diameter with clavulanate (CAZ/CAC) and ratio of ceftazidime MIC/ceftazidime-clavulanate MIC (MIC CAZ/CAC). Molecular typing was performed by DNA macrorestriction analysis...

Ocorrência de bactérias diazotróficas e fungos micorrízicos arbusculares na cultura da mandioca PAB
Balota,Elcio Liborio; Lopes,Eli Sidney; Hungria,Mariangela; Döbereiner,Johanna.

Potential virulence of Klebsiella sp. isolates from enteral diets BJMBR
Pereira,S.C.L.; Vanetti,M.C.D..
We aimed to evaluate the potential virulence of Klebsiella isolates from enteral diets in hospitals, to support nosocomial infection control measures, especially among critical-care patients. Phenotypic determination of virulence factors, such as capsular expression on the external membrane, production of aerobactin siderophore, synthesis of capsular polysaccharide, hemolytic and phospholipase activity, and resistance to antibiotics, which are used therapeutically, were investigated in strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae and K. oxytoca. Modular industrialized enteral diets (30 samples) as used in two public hospitals were analyzed, and Klebsiella isolates were obtained from six (20%) of them. The hypermucoviscous phenotype was observed in one of the K....

Virulence, resistance, and genetic relatedness of Escherichia coli and Klebsiella sp. isolated from mule foals Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Carneiro,V.C.; Lessa,D.A.B.; Guttmann,P.M.; Magalhaes,H.; Aquino,M.H.C.; Cunha,L.E.R.; Arais,L.R.; Cerqueira,A.M.F..
ABSTRACT Respiratory diseases are common in young horses but little is known about such infections in mule foals. This study aimed to characterize Escherichia coli and Klebsiella sp. isolated from tracheal wash (TW) and fecal samples (FS) of mule foals, with or without cytological evidence of respiratory disease. Strains were analyzed against 13 antimicrobials, for presence of Extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), and virulence genes. Phylogrouping and Randomic (RAPD)-PCR profiles were used to evaluate their genetic relatedness. E. coli strains from TW and FS showed greatest resistance to tetracycline, while Klebsiella strains were mainly resistant to ampicillin; multidrug resistance and ESBL production were also detected. The blaCTX gene prevailed...
